Petition for Incorporation

This document records the earlier petition for the incorporation of Croydon as a Borough, addressed to William III and Mary in 1690. The proposal was approved by Queen Mary in May 1691; but, the Secretary of State being quickly removed, her order in Privy Council for a warrant to authorise a charter was never executed. (There may have been some political interference by the Archbishops of Canterbury.) The present petition, addressed to Queen Anne, is therefore for the order to be renewed.
