Croydon Camera Club was founded in 1890 by Hector Maclean. It has continued to meet on Wednesday evenings at various venues in the Borough and currently meets at Shirley Methodist Church. Ladies were first admitted in 1946.
Prominent early members were often involved with the Croydon firm of Wratten and Wainwright, later taken over by Kodak. Its founder I.D.Wratten was a CCC member. Dr Kenneth Mees, later a Kodak vice president and whose experiments gave rise to panochromatic plates, was also a member.
In the 1970s, was first British club to enter into formal association with other clubs in Europe. As a result, regular exhibitions were mounted under name Photeurope.

The CCC has published two histories: John Keane, The story of the Croydon Camera Club: A short account of its origin and early history (1950) and a centenary history by Stuart Pickford, 100 Years of Photography (1990), both shelved at S70 (770) CRO/PIC.

The club has published the book by Keane, and other selections from the archive collection, at www.croydoncameraclub.org.uk
