There is also a photocopy of a handwritten page listing names, dates of birth, marriage and death spanning 3 July 1876 - 7 January 1933, which is possibly the reverse of the photograph. A handwritten memo note providing similiar information is included, covering the same dates, but is not as extensive. The family have a connection with the Bird in Hand pub, Sydenham Road, Croydon and so there is a postcard of the pub and a copy of settlement relating to the same with an inventory of stock dated 1884.

Norwood Plan

  • AR68
  • Collection
  • 1678

Plan of Norwood, in the parishes of Croydon and Lambeth, the property of the Archbishop of Canterbury; by William Mar. The 'North Wood (the origin of the name Norwood) was a chain of oak woods stretching across the Surrey-Kent border. The largest single share, from Saxon times, belonged to the See of Canterbury: it straddled the border between the parishes of Croydon and Lambeth. This plan of the Archbishops property was commissioned for William Sancroft (Archbishop 1678-1691), by 'IT (full name not established), his Woodreeve - the chief manager of the woods. William Mar, the surveyor who produced it, was responsible for other estate maps in Surrey and Oxfordshire; and can probably be identified with the William Mar(r), who worked in London, Middlesex and Surrey, 1640-85; and was a Parliamentary Surveyor of Crown Lands (Source: P Eden, Dictionary of Land Surveyors . . . 1550-1850, 1975-6).

Says Plan of Croydon

Plan of Croydon by Jean Baptiste Say. The plan was drawn in 1785, when Say (aged 18) and his brother Horace were staying in Croydon, at the house of Mr Bisset in Pound Street (George Street). The town plan, and the lost plan of the wider region to which the key refers, seem to have been drawn to illustrate the visit to a correspondent at home.
