2 boxes and a folder of sketchbooks, watercolours, photographs and cuttings of Edward George Handel Licas (1861-1936), a Croydon artist

11 school exercise books, used while at Croydon Boys British School. These exercise books were used for Harold Bings homework; the British School was unusual among elementary schools in Croydon in setting homework in this period. the school was noted for an emphasis on artisitic production (drawing, painting, illumination, etc), which is a feature of these books. The books are marked by teachers, but also by the Headmaster, W H Jarvis, at his weekly inspection (normally with blue pencil in a circle).

Opened 10 January 1929 as a central mixed [boys and girls] school in Winterbourne Road, Thornton Heath. During the second world war the school was evacuated to Eastbourne from September 1939 to June 1940 and the to Wales until 11 January 1943.

Consists of two copies of a document giving a brief history of the company from its formation in February 1941 onwards, including details of land patrolled and other anecdotes. Other documents give detail of training, rules on parade and how to use certain weapons. Also includes two photographs members of the company, including the winning first aid team.

Original sale particulars are in the LSL collection, except those for properties outside Croydon which have been distributed to the relevant local authorities.

The album is titled 'Window Photographs: Young Mens, and was put together in the branch. It contains photographs of model window displays, and cyclostyled instructions, all circulated by Hornes central Display Department (based at 50/57 Newman Street, London W1). They give detailed instructions for standardised window displays, for set dates, for the Young Mens Department.
