Administrative history

The East India company was granted its charter by Queen Elizabeth in 1600. It established the Addiscombe Military Seminary at Addiscombe Place in 1809, for the training of its officer cadets. In 1858, the Company's interests were transferred to the Crown, and the Seminary was renamed the Royal India Military College. It closed in 1861.

Archival history

The present group of records may well have been discarded as being of no permanent value after the College closed. They have probably been held in Croydon Public Libraries since at least the 1950s. Two items clearly originally belonging to this group are now bound in to AR30 (part of JO Peltons collections, acquired July 1923). Library accession no: 34687. Former shelfmark: XS70(355)
