The Croydon Referees Society was founded in 1923 when 43 men met in the old Greyhound Hotel and agreed that an Association for Croydon District should be formed. Later that year the name was changed to Surrey Society of Association Referees (Croydon Branch), presumably anticipating that other branches or societies would be formed in Surrey, although it was not until 1934 that the county-wide umbrella organisation, the Surrey County Referees Association was established.

At the end of the first season the Croydon Society had 54 members, as against the 224 total membership for last season.

The Objects of the Society, as stated in our Rules, are:
to provide opportunities for the Members to meet monthly for social activities and for the discussion of matters relating to the work of referees and for the protection of its members.
to promote the recruitment and training of new referees, and to arrange for their examination and registration by the appropriate Football Association.
The Society meets monthly on the first Thursday of each month from September to April, and for the AGM on the second Thursday in May
