Croydon School Board: Illuminated Signed Address
Part of Croydon School Board
An lluminated address presented to Mrs Emily Grimwade on the termination of her membership of the Board in 1897. It is signed by the head and assistant mistresses of the various schools belonging to the Croydon School Board. The text reads:
To Mrs Grimwade
We the undersigned Head and Assistant Mistresses of the various Schools and classes belonging to the Croydon School Board cannot allow the termination of your Membership of the Board to pass without expressing our deep regret that circumstances have determined you to retire from that position.
During the time of your connection with the Board we have always felt that we had in you a kind and sympathising friend who fully appreciated our difficulties and who represented these difficulties to the Board as only a woman could.
While acknowledging that it would be unreasonable to ask you to continue this work longer we greatly deplore your loss.
We beg you to accept our hearty thanks for all your past kindness, for your ready sympathy and unfailing courtesy and to assure you of our earnest wish for your continued health and happiness.
Also enclosed is a note from Emma Trinder of 77 Brigstock Road dated 30 June 1897. Emma Trinder was then Head of Beulah Road Senior Girls School. The note reads:
My dear Madame,
I have been requested by the Mistresses of the Schools under the Croydon Board to beg your acceptance of the accompanying address, as an expression of the great esteem and affection in which they hold you and of their deep regret at the termination of your connection with the Board.
To myself personally I beg to assure you that I shall always gratefully remember the kind and sympathising way in which you always made our official connection a real pleasure as I am sure it has always been for all of us a real advantage. I am only deeply sorry it is now at an end.
Believe me, dear Madam
Yours most sincerely
E. Trinder
