These letters were written to his local meeting and to his family in Thornton Heath, Croydon. They contain details about his work as a medical orderly with the Anglo-American Mission between February and November 1918

He was based initially at Ornans and later at Sermaize les Bains. He is in touch with "Paris Equipe" Based at the Hotel Britannique, 20 Avenue Victoria. He writes every 2-3 days and there are about 50 letters mentioning the following people:

Opened 22 May 1951 as a secondary modern mixed school. The school subequently acquired a sixth form and became, sucessively, a central, grammar, and 14 - 16 comprehensive school. Closed 31 August 1987 and became part of John Ruskin Sixth Form College.

By 1864 there was a Surrey Congregational Union Chapel on the site of the present school. It was then in use as a school room. The Croydon School Board took over the building on 1 August 1871 and it was used as a girls' and infants' school until 1873 when the infants moved to a separate room. This is Croydon's oldest Board School by 14 days. Administrative papers: 1871 - 1890, CBC/3/2/11; 1891 - 1903, CBC/3/2/12; 1903 - 1924, CBC/3/2/13; 1924 - 1945, CBC/3/2/14. There is a history of the school in "The Beulah Story 1873-1973" by Albert E. Oliver in the Local History collection.

This collection contains material relating to theatres in Croydon, dating between 1755 and 1940, including 56 playbills, four programmes, one file of newspaper cuttings, two prints, and one songbook:

Cuttings from local papers and MS notes collected by J. Corbet Anderson, relating to theatres mainly in Croydon but also in London, dating between 1830 and 1905. Also includes one volume: 'The Theatre: A Monthly Review of the Drama, Music, and the Fine Arts', Vol. XVI, No 91 (London: Eglington & Co., July 1890).

Two prints:
1) Madam Vestrus by J. Cochran. Madam Vestrus played the leading role in 'The Beulah Spa' by Charles Dance, performed a tthe Royal Olympic Theatre in 1833.
2) 'The Gypsy's Life is a Joyous Life' by J. Brandard, printed by M & N Hanhart. This was a song sung at London & provincial concerts.

One songbook for 'The Merry Gypsies, A Favorite Glee', composed by G. T. Smart, written by Mr Arnold. This was sung at the Ladies Concerts by Mrs Harrison, Master Elliot and Mr Bartlemann.

RECORDS OF ROKE PRIMARY SCHOOL

School Records, Primary Education. Coulsdon Roke Infants' School and Coulsdon Roke Post-Infants' School were founded on 27 April 1908. The word "Coulsdon" was later dropped from the title. The Post-Infants' School closed in 1926 when Roke Central School was opened in the building. Roke Junior School opened on 19 April 1950 in premises vacated by Roke Central School. On 1 September 1969 the Infants' School and the Junior School were amalgamated under one head. Roke Primary School/Purley Vale/Purley/Croydon/London/South-East/England. Florence Shephard (c.1894 - 1984) worked for the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate at Croydon Aerodrome in 1929 having previously been based in the AID at A.V.Roe at Hamble near Southampton. In c.1939 she transferred to Leatherhead but continued to commute from the Croydon area.

South Croydon Liberal Club

The minutes would indicate that the club met at various venues in Croydon. The collection consists of a minute book covering the period 23 May 1933 - 28 Febuary 1939. In addition several loose pages of minutes from 19 June 1945 - 27 September 1948. There are three copies of the South Croydon Liberal Association Constitution, two have been amended the third is a draft, two reports one detailing a history of the club and four flyers advertising public meetings. The finances of the club amount to a cash book from 28 September 1909 - 23 April 1938; petty cash book 23 April 1929 - 2 January 1938 and loose cash receipts 6 May 1936 - 3 April 1948. There are also two reciepts books covering 23 March 1936 - 26 June 1937.
