Biographical history

Jean Baptiste Say (1767-1832) became eminent in France as a political economist, in the tradition of Adam Smith. He spent part of his youth in England, and was sent again by the French government in 1814 to study the economics of England.

Archival history

Found in France among Says papers by his grandson M Andre Raoul Duval; and passed by Duval to his cousin, Henry Wyndham. Donated by Wyndham, Oct 1912. There is some confusion in the documentation relating to provenance. Contemporary reports indicate that Henry Wyndham presented the town plan to the Public Library in 1912; but the endorsement by Wyndhams son suggests that what he initially gave was the photographic copy of it, in which case the original plan may have been donated later. None of the documentation refers to the key to the second map, and it is possible that this has a different provenance.

Scope and content

Plan of Croydon by Jean Baptiste Say. The plan was drawn in 1785, when Say (aged 18) and his brother Horace were staying in Croydon, at the house of Mr Bisset in Pound Street (George Street). The town plan, and the lost plan of the wider region to which the key refers, seem to have been drawn to illustrate the visit to a correspondent at home.
